Getting your permit

How old do you have to be to get a learner's permit? How long do you have to hold it before you can get a license? The drivers licensing process is different in every state. Click here to check out the requirements in your state.

One thing to keep in mind: just because you can get your permit or license, doesn't mean you should. Some teens would rather wait, and experts say that's a good idea. The crash rate for all new drivers is high, but it's even higher for those who are younger than 18.

Getting your license

Ready to get your license? Make sure:

• You feel ready.
  Getting a license is a big step — both you and your parent should feel like you're ready to take it.
• You've held your permit for the length of time required by your state.

• You and your parents have signed a teen driver contract.
